The Redtail Myers Hillstream Loach is a freshwater fish known for its distinctive appearance and adaptability to fast-flowing streams. This species is characterized by a streamlined, elongated body with a vibrant reddish-orange tail and a mottled pattern of browns and greens, aiding in camouflage within rocky environments.

Natural Habitat: Native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, particularly in China and parts of Thailand, these loaches are well-adapted to life in swift currents. They use their specialized bodies and suction-cup-like mouths to cling to rocks and substrates in their natural habitat.

Size: Typically, Redtail Hillstream Loaches grow to about 3–4 inches (7.5–10 cm) in length.

Behavior and Temperament: These loaches are peaceful and social fish, best kept in groups of at least five, making them suitable for community tanks with other peaceful species.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Maintain water temperatures between 72–78°F (22–26°C).
    • pH: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.5–7.5.
    • Hardness: Keep water hardness on the softer side, around 2–10 dKH.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a moderate to strong water flow using a powerhead or air-driven sponge filter to simulate their natural environment. Use fine sand or smooth gravel as substrate, and add flat rocks or slate for resting places.

Diet: In the wild, they primarily graze on algae and biofilm. In captivity, their diet can be supplemented with algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, and occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp.

Providing a well-maintained environment with clean, well-oxygenated water and a varied diet will help ensure the health and longevity of the Redtail Myers Hillstream Loach in your aquarium.
